Had Leaf Guard out to give me an estimate for gutter helmets. Was told their system required new gutters and downspouts (house only 1 1/2 years old.

Salesman gave me the typical pitch about their product but most of it was denigrating other companies. Would not give me a bottom line price (said he had to call New Jersey, but only if I signed now). Alarm bells went off. Actually told me their gutter helmet wouldn't keep crap out of the gutters and that was the way it was designed.

Said it would all flush out in the larger downspouts they wanted to sell me. Said they install a clean out compartment in the downspout, hmmmm....wonder why they need that and why I would spend all this money to keep my gutters and downspouts clean if I need to service the downspout filter. Also told me a lot of their stuff was proprietary. Ha, went online and found the same stuff for sale to homeowners.

Lots of alarm bells now. Without an estimate in hand, I called their office to get a rock solid estimate. Said they'd email one right away.

Still waiting. But that's OK, they're off my list.

Thanks to everyone for saving me from making a big mistake with Leaf Guard.

Reason of review: Crafty salesman.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

Cleaning gutters is very dangerous. An acquaintance of mine fell off of his ladder and is now a paraplegic.

Your best bet is still the "old-fashioned" open metal ones that you occasionally have to clean. Much cheaper and durable but if you find yourself having to clean blockages too often, take a look at what is clogging them and why.

The usual culprit are trees too close to the house. Get rid of the trees near your home and your problem will be considerably reduced. You can also install, yourself some gutter coverings, plastic ones for a dollar or so each that you simply slide onto the gutter opening and fit under the shingles and lock in place---they are easily removed, however. I have these after getting rid of the trees close to the home and I rarely have to clean out a clog anywhere in the eaves or downspout.

The plastic covers are about 3 ft. long and usually white and I see them in big box stores like Menard's all the time. Easy to install but make sure you make an access in the covers right over the downspout so you can clean if necessary. Just cut a trap door over the downspout so you can lift it up to clean and secure with a large paperclip, etc.

so it stays shut. Very cost-effective.
