Leafguard gutters are not good for pitched roofs

I have a Cape Code style home with Leaf Guard Gutters and they just suck for catching the water. I have a two to three inch deep indentation in the dirt around my house now due to these gutters. Of course when I spent over $3000 for my gutters the salesman nor the installers from the company bothered to mention these gutters just can't handle the water here in Oregon. I just had my Leaf Guard Gutters removed recently and I'm happy my foundation isn't getting damaged anymore from all the extra water around it. By the way, the gutters do require cleaning. One has to wash the gutters off or scrub them off as pine needles and leafs get stuck on them preventing them from catching enough water. I was cleaning these gutters all the time and they still weren't catching enough water. Don't be fooled by their advertising, these gutters are very time consuming to maintain and are not effective on roofs that are sloped. If you look around the internet, you will find a lot of unhappy customer reviews. I wish I had read more about the product so I didn't blow my money. Scott from Lake Oswego Oregon.

Wow, Leaguard took care of me & I'm happy now.

I submitted a complaint a few months ago about Leafguard Northwest on line. I had their gutters on my Lake Oswego House, there were a few problems and I was pretty unhappy. They saw my complaint online and contacted me. I didn't expect that I would hear from them as most companies don't really care, once they have your money. Wow, I was certainly surprised. They took care of the problems to my satisfaction. I was really pleased they were very quick with getting the problems solved. They were good to work with and I can give them a positive review now. Answer to Ice Dam Complaints

Updated by user Mar 26, 2013

I have been in contact with Englert and was told that I would receive an update relative to my invention being discussed with the CEO. Today I have not heard anything regarding my offer to work with LeafGuard to address the Ice Damming problem with the Ice Dam Preventer.

I will follow-up again today as I was told by the Director I spoke with "...to give them some time".

I will provide an update once I receive a formal response from Englert. I hope we can put the problem to rest with my invention which I have patent.

Original review Feb 23, 2013
I have the Leaf Guard Gutter System and was amazed at the accumulation of icicles after the first snowfall. Consequently, I invented a device to use to prevent ice daming and it is solar powered. A review of the device entitled "Ice Dam Preventer" is available at InventionHome.com and NewProductHelp.com. Please contact me to discuss how we might be able to work together to address the ice issues--by the way the device has a provisional patent. Please use my e-mail at joseph.meheskijr@***.net. Since I must add at least 100 words, I would like to add that I was the most embarrassed neighbor in the neighborhood!

Leaf Guard is a Fraud

I scheduled an appointment with Leaf Guard. They came out and gave us a quote.

We gave them half the money, and agreed to pay the other half upon completion of services. They took our money and will not return our calls.

This company is a scam. Do not let them into your home. I have tried calling the company and you get some generic answering service.

It is not a real company. They do not provide their address, or anything. Looking back there are a ton of red flags you should see (that I missed).

I will devote my life to exposing this fraud.

Leafguard NW

Leafguard NW based out of Tigard, OR is a rip off. *** customer service and an even worse way overpriced product.

Why don't they give you a per price foot? Because it is over 3 times the price over regular gutters. They charge $20 per foot for gutter and $9 for downspout with a $1,200+ set up fee what ever that it and don't forget the 10%+ commission for the salesman. If you don't believe me call the branch directly 503-646-**** and ask for the info.

Who ever answers has this info has it right in front of them but will refuse to give it to you instead they will want to sign you up for an estimate which is "no obligation" but if you say no to the typical 6K+ price tag they will call you at least once a week for the next year until you say yes or move or change your number. Do yourself a favor and don't use this business for endless reasons; just get regular gutters and have them service a couple times a year it will save you money and you wont feel taken advantage of like I have.

We recently purchased Leafguard Gutters. Over this winter, large Icicles have formed off the edge of the gutters and heavy thick ice builds up above the gutters.

The ice falls without notice and is extremely dangerous to people and pets beneath. The heavy build up of ice continues to slowly drip on our porches and walks creating dangerously icy conditions on the ground. We would advise everyone to look into the dangerous winter conditions these gutters can create before installing. We called the company and did not get a satisfactory reply.

We were told they were not opened for business on a weekend. Told to call back on Monday.

Resubmitting my complaint to add photos of the problem of ice buildup. We are worried also about possible roof and foundation damage.

We purchased leaf guard last summer and we had some heavy rain causing the gutters to over flow so they had to come back and add 2 more down spouts at additional cost to us and it still over flows. Now this winter we are having the same problem ice build up above the gutter and large icicles that come crashing down very dangerous.

We replaced our regular gutters - (which handled the heavy rain and we did not have the heavy ice build up) with the leaf guard and we have been regretting our decision ever since.

We would have been better off getting regular gutters at a fraction of the price. Think twice before buying

Guest

That's what leaf guards do. Keep leaves out of gutters .

.. but openings so small that rain, water and melting snow are unable to penetrate the openings to drain into the gutter. Insread flow over the leaf guard and run off the top of the gutter or behind the gutter and drop down the siding/brick.

Heat tape properly installed will remedy it. Or remove leaf guards .

Or trim back trees. Forget the company - install a remedy before you get water damage in roof or brick

Installer caused roof leak and they wont come to fix it

In October 2012, Leafguard installed new gutters on my home in Carmel, NY. Within a week, there was a rain storm and water leaked into my kitchen through a light in the ceiling - very dangerous. Since the roof was only a year old and had never leaked before, I knew the problem was caused by Leafguard's installer. I called Pete at Leafguard. He said his installer would come and look at it. I waited home three different days over the course of 2 months. He never came. For the past two months Pete will not even answer my phone calls. Now I can't even find a corporate name to write to or call. THe only recourse I have will be to sue which is what I intend to do.

Company is Aware of Problems

This company is aware of the "ice dam" problems. Never had this problem in the 26 years in my home.

Had Leaf Guard installed prior to last winter, now I get 4-6 ft icicles over my front steps when it snows. They drip aduring the day and refreeze on our front steps overnight. Paul has come out once to look and suggested installing a heater at his cost, that was last winter. Now after numerous unreturned phone calls and texts,no contact from him at all.

Still left with same problem.

After this winter I will probably change the gutters back to the original icicle free system, at my expense. Stay away from this system.

We also have the icicle problem since having Leaf Guard installed! They keep leaves out but ice dams form because the water does not flow into the gutter.

We were also told when we complained to install heating cables and the problem is the ventilation.

Each year they are on is worse now the garage and porch that are not insulated have 3 to 4 foot icicles and water flowing behind the gutter. Positive reviews from California customers I did not see one positive review from a customer in the Northeast.

Guest

These guus are selling an inferior product and are chargi g exhorbinant prices.

Guest

I have the same problem now that I bought the leaf guard gutters major ice build up . I don't recommend this product. Never had this problem before

Guest

We are having exactly the same problem! Due to the design, I would have expected some icicles (WHICH WE NEVER HAD BEFORE -- and we've certainly had colder winters and bigger storms), but nothing like the 4- to 6-foot monsters hanging from my house during this first winter with this system.

This is very dangerous -- huge icicles and ice-covered walk and porch step. Apparently, we've traded the occasional danger of one of us falling from the roof to the more frequent risk of one of us or someone else falling on ice or being hit by a huge dagger of ice. The most gigantic icicles are on the gutters on the sides of the unheated garage -- so at least the car is safe. I am so very, very, very disappointed.

We are retired, and I don't know how we're going to afford having it replaced.

My house now looks like an advertisement for why not to buy this product. Guess it's time to take the "Perfect One-Piece Gutter System LeafGuard" sign down.

Johnisha Dlp

Our problem is the same, we had the LeafGuard Gutters installed in June, 2012. We have gone through the winter snows with hanging icicles and built up ice atop the gutters. It is extremely dangerous! We have had near misses with our pets and ourselves when the huge icicles fall and large chunks of ice slide off the gutters. WE DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH OUR OLD GUTTERS. thus I wonder how it can suddenly be attributed to faulty insulation.

We now have a constant drip of water on our porch and walkway creating dangerous ice rinks. I am adding photos of the ice mess LeafGuard gutters. We did not capture the worst of the ice with our photos. These are a few photos taken after most of the icicles fell and the slide off of ice occurred. The Ice remains atop the gutters and continues to drip and refreeze.

Our sales rep did not once mention or question the quality of our insulation or that there could be a problem in winter. He only focused on how "good" the gutters are and what a great buy we were getting. When I reported the problem to the rep he had a ready answer that we have faulty roof insulation, without even visually inspecting the gutters. Also very disappointed and have made a bad investment.

I also wish I had saved my money and kept old gutters. LeafGuard is a joke on the consumer.

I called 9/27 for some repair work. I also have ice dams, but told that is my problem.

Strange I only get them with LeafGuard. Winter is nearly here, guess I better get used to lousy system.

LeafGuard gutters WILL clog

LeafGuard gutters worked fine for about 3 years. Then I noticed one dounspout was not draining any water after a rain.

A peek inside the gutter revealed it was clogged with pine needles. If you have any pine trees nearby, they will definalely cause the gutter to clog in time. The bottome line is, they will not work in areas where pine trees are near the house. I have not tried to unclog the downspout yet.

Don't know what is involved in doing so.

Will probably have to call in a professional to get it unclogged. I suspect other downspouts will be clogged soon.

Our new LeafGuard system is overflowing during a rain storm and leaving a deep drip line in our garden area. We don't know at this time if the gutters are clogging, but you can see fir needles "peeking" out them.

Guest

It was explained to me before purchasing the system that there is nominal maintanence. That yes they do clog.

You must have a Home under a lot of trees.

So spraying with a hose to clear the gutters doesn't unclog the gutters? I put the system on two houses and the only issue I have had is the spouts to the ground fall apart because the extend to the driveway and are pond and the yard man trips over them.

After installation in November 2011, the gutters are clogged (worse than the removed ones) this spring. I called and they don't have anyone available to upclog the gutters for 3 weeks.

In the mean-time, when it rains, water will continue to POUR onto my front door step, so much that I can't use the front door in heavy rain. I will keep you posted.

The posts here are making me nervous. I would have never spent this kind of money if I knew they would clog and I would have to call.

Leaf Guard - no one to complain to

We have the leaf guard system installed a month ago. Two rainstorms showed us that it was installed improperly since we now have rain pouring in behind our chimney.

Four calls to the installer Long Island Leaf Guard have resulted in promises to come out to make repairs and to call us back. No call back and no repairs. We called the 1-80*-532-**** number for the parent company and the number is disconnected. I am submitting a complaint on line but based on what has happened so far, I am not holding my breath.

We checked out the installer with the Nassau County Bureau of Consumer Affairs and there were no complaints.

Ed Schmelzer, the salesman with LeafGuard NW in Tigard, Oregon, promised us a full refund if we didn't like the product. No questions asked.

The day they installed the gutters I called to complain. They placed industrial sized downspouts right in front of 2 picture windows. They completely destroyed the aesthetics of our home. They also left sharp metal objects & glue strewn all over the yard & roof. We have animals so this concerned me greatly.

They said they'd move the gutters. My husband flew in from LA where he was working but Ed never showed up. The 2 workers didn't know what to do to solve the problem so left. Today, a week later, I notice a long piece of sharp metal hanging down from the roof in front of our living room window!

After numerous unanswered calls and e-mails, the company calls & tells me they will not honor Ed's promise of a full refund. So it's clear this Ed Schmeltzer lied to us to steal $20,000.00 from us! Needless to say we want our promised refund.

If they damaged the roof, we want compensation for that as well. If LeafGuard doesn't stand behind its promises we'll have no choice but to contact the Attorney General.

A. O

Sorry I did not write back sooner. Our installer finally called back and arranged an appointment a week or two after this began.

It turned out that the installation did not include an extra downspout that was on the old system. Once this was put in, we have have no more problems.

LeafGuard Gutters

I would never purchase LeafGuard gutters again as they are poorly installed and are labor intensive to keep working properly. In the Pacific NW moss and algae grow in the gutters (not one of the "non-clog" reasons) which mean they have to be manually claened yearly. This means getting on a ladder and scrubbing them out otherwise the water doesn't go in. If you have to climb the ladder yearly anyway, why not save the $8,000 more than from regular gutters and use it to pay someone to clean out the leaves. LeafGuard and Costco do not stand behind any of their stated warranties nor do Good Housekeeping or the Better Business Bureau when you try to get resolution through them. These LeafGuard gutters were improperly installed and the corner seams leak. LeafGuard says this is the fault of the roof. Like saying the fork is the reason people get fat.

Leafguard

Leafguard seems like a great product but consumers need to know.....companies who are not good to their employees usually are not good to their customers. If the owners care about their product and customer satisfaction then they should trust and care about their employees. All they care about is making sure their salesmen sell the product. So buyer beware! The Rep that comes to your home will be a pushy sales rep. The Reps are have to respond after your appointment if they sold you or not and then get in trouble because you the customer don't have the money to purchase the gutters. There philosophy is you sell it whether you have the money or not. If they don't have the money then the rep should suggest to you to borrow the money from family. This is just a warning to beware! If you are a customer or someone looking for a job you may want to think twice.

This post is such baloney. Obviously a competitor trying to besmurch a reputable company.

I have had leafguard to 3 of my homes and never was pushed, asked for me to borrow money or any of the outrageous claims this guy makes.

In fact they did offer me financing options. I purchased all 3 times because I know the product works and will save me money in the long run.

Booker Hvl

I also worked for them but it was in another part of the U.S. I just think it is terrible to give leads to reps that clearly state "customer states they do not have the money to purchase gutters".

Booker Hvl

John, sounds like you may work for them and actually work for a great owner. I am happy for you and wish you great success.

Leafguard employees a lot of long term employees who are proud of the excellent service they provide to customers.

This posting sounds like a disgruntled ex-employee who was a poor performer.

Anonymous postings are usually not a true representation of an organization.

Leafguard northwest..dont use

i have been on here and listen to the complaints about leafguard ... heres the truth about leafguard they really dont care about the customer thats why i dont work there anymore i have been a gutter installer for many years and believe in customer first they only believe in dollar signs the portland office needs approximatly 1,000,000 per month to break even..wonder why it cost so much for leaf guard for material that cost 2.00 a foot and almost all jobs have a problem .i was at our weekly meeting we had 573 call backs to jobs and unhappy customers if you have pine needles they will build up on top of the gutter water will run off and make a trench a foot deep and and splatter mud all over your house..dont use them just go to a local gutter company for gutters and have them service them once a year youll be thousands ahead ...

Only one comment about gutter cleaning compared to any kind of leaf guard and it is to the comment portion about

(Are you aware how many people (including installers) are seriously injured each year from ladder accidents. Did you consider the fact that if a gutter cleaner falls off the ladder and is permanently injured, that homeowner will be paying for his injuries until he is deemed able to return to work - if he is able to return to work)

Does your product have wings and install itself, you are at the same risk on your install as a gutter cleaner is at his cleaning, So I ask why bring that up at all.

The guy who thinks it will never happen to him, is a fool.

Have a safe and Happy day.

Be Safe

Guest

He probably remained anonymous because he was slandering the company and did not want to be sued since he was an employee and probably needed a job and showing his name might hinder that. I believe what he said and Susan thinks because they have a bbb seal of approval that means something.

It does not, just call them and make a complaint and see what they do. NOTHING.

Susan is just trying to save face. I am sure there are happy people with gutter system in Phoenix, but try Portland it actually rains here and it has a lot of trees unlike Illinois.

Guest

never did say either system was perfect but I know I went on 10 times more service calls working for Leafguard in a year than 5 years of gutter installing ...that's all ..and as for answer or I should say safe tactic to homeowners such a corporate answer its probably part of your job to look for complaints and try and throw water on them..have a good day

Guest

William, sorry but you are so wrong about the liability. Does not matter if the gutter company is insured or not, injured workers file against homeowners as well.

You talk about the damage LeafGuard has done yet we see daily the damage standard clogged gutters do. We will never agree, so what's the point of arguing, but let the homeowners call their insurance companies themselves and find out for themselves that it is irrelevant if the company is insured, they will still go after the homeowner as well.

Guest

no Susan not a small company masco corporation is not small its a publicly traded company that's who I worked for and yes I was talking about material not all the rest of overhead understood. the corporate office should do some house cleaning there I don't know if the English Guy is there still i wont say his name as Gm but what a piece of work his line about the customer is quote"buyers are liars"I am sure that you believe in your product and nothing is perfect but I did hundreds of services and seen the damage Leafguard has done but it has worked in many cases and left on good terms actually..but felt it necessary to let people know I've actually started a article I may publish its kinda like soap opera.

so please don't personally attack me. and trying to scare customers with the liability thing about falling off the roof wouldn't happen if they hire a gutter company that has their ins..gutter cleaning fraction of the cost and works great.Susan have a great day

Guest

Mr. Anonymous (why don't you use your name?)

I have worked for LeafGuard since 2000 - that's 12 years and what you're saying about

Portland may be true, but it certainly isn't true about all LeafGuard offices. We do care about our customers - hence, the A rating with the BBB. You're way off on the cost of materials too! You're looking at coil cost not including the shipping cost, labor cost,

cost of doing business, staffing cost, etc. If you are just a gutter installer then I suspect you worked for a small company that had minimal operating cost. You advise the person to get standard gutters then pay that company to maintain them. Are you aware how many people (including installers) are seriously injured each year from ladder accidents. Did you consider the fact that if

a gutter cleaner falls off the ladder and is permanently injured, that homeowner will be paying for his injuries until he is deemed able to return to work - if he is able to return to work. It sounds to me like you departed your employment on less than favorable terms and feel your last chance for

retribution is to come on this web site and trash this product. Before you do, find out how many LeafGuard offices exist across the country as well as Canada and how many hundreds of thousands LeafGuard customers exist. Even if Portland had 50 unhappy customers, that is a drop in the bucket compared to the number of happy customers. If

customers are unhappy, they are free to call the corporate office in New Jersey, ask for

Mitch Gaber and they will be handled professionally. I also find it ironic that you refused to give your name but preferred to remain "anonymous". That itself says alot about your comments.

Leaf Guard Rip Off

I was convinced by a salesman by the name of John Moeller with Leaf Guard of Indianapolis that his guttering system was the only helmeted guttering system that worked and that his company was the best company to do the install. Leaf Guard guttering system was installed last February and have not worked properly since installation. After purchasing this loser of a guttering system I thought to myself how *** I was to spend this much money for gutters and hindsight tells me I was right. I have attempted to have Leaf Guard resolve the rain water overflow problem and the leaks between the gutters and the facial for three months with no satisfaction. I was told by Mr. John Moeller that if we were not satisfied and they could not resolve issues than they would take them off and give our money back. Needless to say neither has happened. I am thoroughly disgusted but determined to either have them fixed or replaced even if it takes legal action. Do not trust this company. They do a lot of promising but will not stand behind their product or their distributors.

Leafguard Totally Inept

I have absolutely nothing nice to say about Leafguard Colorado. My wife and I are in our 70's. It's difficult for me to climb a ladder to clean gutters as I use oxygen. We had very little savings but felt the product was a neccesity. They have installed the wrong width of gutter, twice. The Leafguard had a huge ice buildup over our garage doors. They "inadvertenly" took our original contract when the service manager came to our house. Then they had the audacity to return a photo copy that had been altered. WE DO NOT TRUST THEM. Basically we have ended up with the same style and size of gutters over 80% of our house that we started with.

They are completely unethical. They altered our contract as well.

They also installed the wrong size gutters on our home. We don't even have flashing because the wind blew it away, putting the children in our neighborhood at risk. I wish I could offer advice. Sue them.

I, for one, will be more than happy to fly out there and tell the court what they did to me. It's company wide, not just regional.

These people are criminals. Of this I have no doubt.

Guest

Thank you for this review, which along with so many others out there, is very detailed in the explanation of the problems this company has caused. I was a bit suspicious of them because of the commercial.

As the guy is describing the product to an 'interviewer', he's sitting with dogs in his lap. He pets and coos at them. That's so manipulative. So if the guy owns dogs and is cutesy with them he must be honest, right?

Shameful. I'll never hire them.

I sure hope you sued for a refund, damage repair, plus all attorney costs. It's a good idea for people to take before and after photos and videos of the home and gutters.

Both close-up and at a distance, from different angles, etc, making sure to include a date stamp or date proof of some sort.

That way no company can say they didn't damage something if things go wrong, or say a certain type of gutter didn't exist prior to installation, or whatever else may happen. Good times.
